What Are the Symptoms of Heart Disease?

Unfortunately, many of the symptoms of heart disease are also similar to those of many other conditions that affect pets.

Therefore, we recommend bringing your pet in for an exam if he or she exhibits one or more of the following symptoms:

Our Cardiology Services

At The Maywood Veterinary Clinic, our facility is equipped with industry-leading technology that enables us to expertly and accurately diagnose heart conditions in pets. One of the best ways to monitor your pet’s heart is to have their blood pressure measured during routine wellness exams. Extremely high blood pressure can lead to heart failure. We will also perform blood tests during annual wellness exams. These measure your pet’s hormone levels; significant change is often an indication of heart failure.

Other diagnostic procedures include:

  • X-rays to examine your pet’s heart, lungs, and bones: Through x-rays, we can make sure your pet’s heart isn’t enlarged and there is no fluid build-up in the lungs. If your pet requires a pacemaker, we will use x-rays to help us determine the best placement.
  • EKGs: We use these to detect any abnormalities in your pet’s heart rate.
  • Ultrasound: Through an ultrasound, our veterinarians can get a real-time view of your pet’s heart. We often use ultrasounds to screen for heart murmurs and observe blood flow.
